Peter Lucas sat still in his flat overlooking the apartment suspected to be owned by Constantine Veltin. A package had arrived early in the morning, the doorman had called up to let Peter know it had arrived and he had taken the stairs down to the lobby to retrieve it. It was the only time since he had arrived that he had spent more than a few seconds not watching the third-floor windows for signs of life. With daylight he could now watch both the windows and the street in front of the building. The package had contained valuable intelligence provided by Craft. Multiple pictures of Veltin, his aides and bodyguards and one of the women who cleaned the Helsinki apartment.

It also contained the entire CIA dossier on Chairman Veltin and the entire CIA dossier on General, now General Secretary Volkov. The final pictures in the package were three photos of an attractive brunette. Pete had seen one of the pictures before, it hung in the hallway of his home in Ontario. The photos were of Irena Bolosova, Katia’s mother. The picture Pete was familiar with had been cropped to show only Irena, the original included her husband and then sixteen-year-old Katia. The other two photos were candid shots taken with a long lens, Irena meeting with a man dressed in a heavy overcoat and fur hat in one image and a second picture that showed Irena having lunch with two men. This photo had been taken through the restaurant window from across the street. Pete recognized one of the men eating lunch with his future mother in law and his stomach tightened slightly.

On the back of each photo written in a code he and Craft had used since Pete was in basic training years before were the names of the individuals shown in the photo and where the picture had been taken. He checked the first photo, the one cropped from the family portrait, for the intel to be verified even initially he would use the info on the back of this photo as a test. He translated the coded message and nodded even though he was alone, the date, and location of the portrait matched what Katia had told him exactly. The message also mentioned that the image was cropped from a family portrait and that the original included her husband and daughter.

The second image’s message introduced Pete to a man named Andreas Stolli whom the message said was a high level operative within the KGB, and Pete’s stomach tightened further when he read that Stolli was Irena Bolosova’s handler, meaning Irena was also KGB, and undercover at the time the photo was taken. Which Pete translated the date to nine months before her husband had been accused of spying for MI6 and four Spetsnaz goons had tried to kidnap her daughter in Italy.

Pete continued to glance from the documents to the scene outside his fourth-floor window and back, difficult as it was to concentrate on his surveillance while digesting the fact that Katia’s mother had been, or may still be, KGB.
